Tips & Tricks
Smart things to think about before you swing.
Uphill lie → ball draws (draw/hook)
Aim slightly right of the flag (for right-handers). The clubface closes naturally and the ball flies higher but shorter — take 1 more club.
Why: The slope tilts the swing plane left, which closes the face at impact.
Downhill lie → ball fades/slices
Aim slightly left of the flag. The ball flies lower and longer — take 1 less club. Let your body follow down the slope.
Why: The swing plane opens to the right and loft is reduced, giving a lower ball flight with fade spin.
Ball above feet → draw/hook
Choke down on the club, aim right of target, swing smoothly. The ball wants to go left.
Why: The club comes in flatter and more closed than from a level lie.
Ball below feet → fade/slice
Bend the knees more, keep your balance, aim left of target. Take an extra club and swing under control.
Why: You swing more upright and the club opens naturally at impact.
Headwind: swing easy
Take 1–2 more clubs, choke down, swing at 75–80%. Hard swing = more spin = ball climbs and dies.
Why: Headwind dramatically amplifies backspin. A smooth swing keeps spin down and the flight penetrating.
Tailwind: count on rollout
Take 1 less club. The ball flies further and the green won't hold as well — aim short.
Crosswind: ride the wind
Easier to aim into the wind and let it carry the ball to the target than to fight it. Stopping it on the green also gets easier.
Rain: longer irons, less spin
Wet grooves give less spin — the ball flies further but stops worse. Aim to roll onto the green.
Cold weather: ball flies shorter
Roughly 2 m shorter per 10°C below 20°C. Take an extra club and warm your hands between shots.
Why: Cold air is denser and a cold ball compresses worse at impact.
Hot weather: ball flies further
Roughly +2 m per 10°C above 20°C. Drink water — dehydration kills tempo fast.
High altitude: extra carry
Per 300 m of elevation: roughly +2% carry. On mountain courses — take a shorter club than your usual distance.
Under trees: punch shot
Ball back in stance, hands ahead, short backswing and short finish. Lower loft, more roll.
Fairway bunker: clean strike
Take one more club, dig your feet in slightly, choke down. Hit the ball FIRST — avoid the sand.
Greenside bunker: open the face
Open stance, open face, aim 5 cm behind the ball and swing through to the finish. Acceleration is everything.
Chip: think putt
Pick the club that lifts the ball briefly and rolls the most — like a long putt. Fewer moving parts = fewer mistakes.
Lag putt: speed before line
Aim for a 1 m circle around the hole. Three-putts come from poor speed, rarely from missed lines.
Pre-shot routine
Same routine every shot: picture → rehearsal → aim → exhale → swing. Comfort under pressure comes from repetition.
Play your safe side
Identify where a bad miss goes. Aim so your WORST miss still lands on the fairway or green.
Tempo under pressure
When adrenaline pumps you tend to swing faster. Count '1-and-2' in your head on the backswing to keep rhythm.
Wet rough: 'flier' coming
Grass between ball and face = less spin = ball flies 5–15% further. Aim short of the green.
